Human joints

How many joints are in the human body?  There are 360 joints in the human body. The definition of a joint is that it’s the point at which two bones connect.  Some only count the moveable joints, which knocks that number down to about 250.  There are three types of joints in the human body:  Immovable (synarthrosis), slightly moveable (amphiarthrosis), and freely moveable (diarthrosis). Immovable human joints are fixed, which means two bones can connect, but they do not move, or they aren’t used for movement.  Immovable joints include the joints between the plates of the skull, known as sutures.  Slightly moveable joints include those that allow minimal movement like the vertebrae in the spine.  Freely moveable joints have synovial fluid to lessen the jarring impact of the movement range in this joint type.  Examples of freely moveable human joints are the knee and shoulder joints. There are six kinds of freely moveable joints:  Hinge, ball and socket, condyloid, pivot, saddle, and gliding.  We will cover all of these joints in our orthopedic blog.  We’ll review questions like what is joint disease? And how can I treat my joint pain at home? The adult human skeletal system has a complex and beautiful architecture that is supposed to work like a machine.  In orthopedics, we focus on returning the body to normal, fluid movement, which has everything to do with your 206 bones (if you’re an adult; 270 in babies) and how they connect with ligaments, cartilage, tendons, and three types of joints mentioned above. In this blog category, we’ll cover a wide range of medical conditions and surgical procedures that affect joints, tendons, cartilage, and ligaments.  Bones will fall into another category. Nothing we write in our blog or on our website is meant to diagnose or treat conditions of the joint.
